A bad idea that I’m surprised still has legs is that of replacing revenue focused taxes with a Financial Transaction Tax.
This idea came into New Zealand via the Social Credit movement and they’ve kept it through to their current incarnation. It became Alliance Party policy and appears to have been kept by the Progressive Party past that particular schism.
I’ve discovered it’s appeared again with the fringe Direct Democracy Party. Apparently it can now replace all taxes!
Amongst other reasons, it won’t work as most transactions are voluntary. Tax lawyers are particularly good at avoiding the voluntary.
