More than just disgruntled fathers?

15 April, 2008 · 4 Comments

It’s been claimed the Republic of NZ Party is more than just disgruntled fathers.   Identifying what more there is isn’t easy.

Aside from proposing a republic and binding referenda, they’ve few policy positions considering 2008 will be their second election.  Their press releases are usually just attack pieces and many contain a disgruntled father angle.

Notably, there’s scant detail on the proposed republic or much on republicanism generally (while there’s much to say). The only position that differentiates them from other political parties is men’s rights and there isn’t 5% of the vote in that.

‘…and there isn’t 5% of the vote in that’

Nor was there even 0.03% of the vote in it – they (he?) got 344 votes last time around.

‘ they (he?) got 344 votes last time around.’

Now that comment is just uncharitable, there’s certainly more than one of them. Although 334 votes means at most only 66.8% of their paid up members voted for them – that’s pretty embarrassing.

Interestingly, they’ve managed to remain registered as a party even though their result at the 2005 election was less than the required membership.

I suspect more people are willing to give these guys $1, and become a financial member of the party, than they are to give these guys a vote.

I see they haven’t managed to comment on the recent Aussie republic discussion or your recent poll – they really don’t seem too motivated by republicanism.
