The Family Party is counting on South Auckland voters being stupid or ambivalent about economic policy. The party has rather right-wing economic policy. The voters it is pursuing have always voted Labour (economically left wing).
The Family Party must be assuming stupidity or ambivalence if they expect to win seats in South Auckland voters. This is, of course, not even considering that these voters might not want to create another coalition partner for National in Parliament.
I’m guessing people in Mangere, Manukau East and Manurewa aren’t that unsophisticated.

You’re probably right. But there are always those who vote on emotion rather than any rational basis. That’s because, knowing very little about a great deal, they really only have emotion to go on. No one has been keeping secrets from them. They just aren’t very curious and not knowing much is easier for them ‘in the moment’ than spending hours of each day over years developing a beter understanding of the world. Most people see little value in that……as evidenced by their behaviour and voting preferences.

All very true. The Family Party’s strategy of focusing on the relatively emotional issues such as smacking and prostitution plays for those voters quite well.

In the United States the Republican’s have used a faux culture war to get working class people to vote against their own interests for years now, and given that our fundies draw a lot of their ideas from the nut job religious right in the USA it isn’t surprising to see the same tactics tried here.

A very likely similar tactic in this case I’d agree.
Taking that comparison further, I wonder whether the Republicans have/had made inroads to poor-but-religiously-conservative Hispanics and Blacks?

Bill and Ben Party received more votes than the Family Party, so I guess South Auckland voters saw through the Family Party campaign.

Definitely, they were humilated by the result given their bluster during the campaign.
The Family Party wouldn’t even be happy with how much they beat Bill & Ben by in the 3 key Sth Auckland electorates.
